
'Hipster' is a new concept for me (certainly not something we discussed around the boardroom table in the corporate world). Anyhow, I've stumbled across this article today & thought it may interest those of you who aren't as familiar with the term. There were a couple of 'ah ha' moments reading this . . . but perhaps I'm just showing my age?

ReplyDeleteI think I mentioned this essay in theory a few weeks ago—it's been doing the rounds for a while now. Certainly it's an interesting idea, and probably true.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you could argue that the increase in popularity of screen media plays a role—that videogames never really produce anything physical, that increased television viewing has been shown to lower educational outcomes, and that online time sinks like Facebook only reference other events. Hipsters have grown up in a society dominated by the virtual image.
The question remains as to what extent hipsters will continue to influence cultural output, or, as the article states, they have failed to produce anything of meaning to begin with. Surely there are others who are producing works of significance within this 'western' generation?
